A member of the Sam Houston Athletics department since 2005, Jason Barfield serves as the associate athletic director for media relations.
His duties include video board operations, video streaming, and website video features. Barfield also serves as the liaison for Bearkat radio and TV. On the sports information side, he is the primary contact for women’s bowling, as well as men’s and women’s golf.
Barfield has assisted with the promotion of all 17 Bearkat sports. In addition to his media relations responsibilities, he has overseen the implementation of four new video boards that have been installed at Bowers Stadium, Johnson Coliseum, Don Sanders Stadium, and the Bearkat Softball Complex.
In 2008, Barfield started what has now become the Bearkat Sports Network, streaming more than 60 SHSU sporting events live each year. In 2016, he began the transition to streaming live events for ESPN.
In the spring of 2020, Barfield and his staff began work on the Woodforest Bank Athletic Center Media Studio. The WBAC includes a 500 square foot studio and podcast center, and two control rooms. The master control room was operational in February of 2021 and the BSN staff produced an event from a remote location for the first time. Also in the Spring of 2021, BSN started self-producing football for ESPN+. Sam Houston now produces seven sports for the ESPN streaming platform (football, baseball, softball, soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and volleyball).
Barfield has served as the play-by-play voice for Sam Houston baseball, in addition to working on the ESPN and radio broadcasts for football, basketball, and soccer.
He was promoted to his current position on August 16, 2016, after serving nine years as SHSU assistant AD/media coordinator. Barfield has worked in the Media Relations department at Sam Houston since 2007 and has been a full-time member of the athletic department since 2005.
Previously, he served as sports editor of the Huntsville Item where he was honored 13 times for state and regional writing and design awards.
Barfield graduated from Sam Houston in 2000 with a degree in radio/television and a minor in journalism. While a student, he was involved with Channel 7 News as both a sports anchor and sports director. Barfield also called Bearkat football, basketball, and baseball games for 90.5 FM and was a member of the sports staff at The Houstonian, the school’s student newspaper. He worked as a student assistant in the sports information department from 1995 – 2000.
